Churntide vs Stripe customer portal

Stripe's customer portal is free, takes zero integration, and its cancellation page already collects a reason from a fixed list of eight and can show one retention coupon. Smart Retries and basic dunning emails cover failed payments. For a lot of small products that is genuinely enough.

What it can't do: offer a pause (Stripe's docs say the portal doesn't support it), show a different offer by reason or plan, A/B test, put a payment-failed banner in your app, or email cancelled customers to win them back. Churntide adds those from $29/mo on top of the Stripe you already have.

Where Stripe customer portal wins

  • It's free. There is no price to beat, and no invoice to justify.
  • Zero integration. Turn it on in the Stripe dashboard, drop a link to it in your app, done. Churntide is a script tag or a hosted link plus a restricted key — quick, but not zero.
  • It's fine if one coupon is all you'd offer anyway. If every canceller would get the same 20% off and you'd never pause anyone, the portal already does the job.
  • Smart Retries are good. A lot of failed payments come back on Stripe's own retries with no help from anyone. Our recovery sits on top of that rather than replacing it.

Where Churntide wins

  • Pause offers. Customers who aren't using the product right now or have a temporary budget squeeze are the most saveable group after price objections, and the portal cannot offer them a pause.
  • Targeting. A different offer by reason, plan and MRR range — a downgrade for the price objection, a pause for the non-user, a talk-to-us for the missing feature — instead of one coupon for all eight reasons.
  • Recovery beyond email. A tracked in-app banner that only shows when that customer has an open failed payment, plus dunning emails you write, on Stripe's retry schedule.
  • Win-back and measurement. Emails to customers who did leave, session-level data on what was shown and accepted, A/B testing on Growth, webhooks per session.
  • Honest weaknesses: it costs money ($29/mo) and it's another tool. Launched August 2026, no logos, no SOC 2. If the portal is working for you, stay on it.

Pricing maths: a SaaS at $4k MRR

Say ~80 customers at ~$50/mo, losing 6 a month. The portal's single coupon mostly reaches the "too expensive" cancellers — call it 2 of the 6 — and saves some of them. Suppose it saves 1 a month.

A targeted flow at a 25% blended save rate saves 1.5 a month — the extra half a save comes mostly from pause offers to the "not using it" group the coupon can't reach. If a saved customer stays another 8 months, that half a save is worth about $200/mo in expectation, against a $29/mo Starter plan.

The break-even is low: Churntide needs to be responsible for about one extra save every seven months to cover itself at this size. Failed-payment recovery is on top of that — if the in-app banner catches one $50 customer a quarter that generic dunning emails would have lost, that's another $400 a year.

The honest counter: if you have 10 customers and lose one a quarter, none of this maths works and you should use the portal.

Questions people ask

Can Stripe's customer portal offer a pause instead of cancelling?

No. As of our last check Stripe's docs say the portal does not support allowing a customer to pause. You can pause subscriptions from the Stripe API, which is what Churntide does when a customer accepts a pause offer.

Do I still need the Stripe portal if I use Churntide?

Keep it for payment-method updates and invoices — Churntide's recovery links open a portal session for exactly that. Just point your cancel button at the Churntide flow instead of the portal's cancellation page.

Does Churntide replace Stripe's Smart Retries?

No, it works alongside them. Stripe keeps retrying on its schedule; Churntide adds the emails and the in-app banner, and tracks who clicked and who recovered.
